La superstar congolaise fait escale à l’ING Arena (Palais 12) pour un concert torride
Le terme « multitalent » est trop souvent utilisé sans discernement, mais il s’applique à juste titre à Fally Ipupa. Chanteur, compositeur, danseur, guitariste, producteur, etc. : il a plusieurs cordes à son arc, toutes aussi percutantes les unes que les autres. Les journées de ce bourreau de travail semblent compter vingt-cinq heures. Dans un premier temps, il a été musicien de rue. Ensuite, il rejoint les rangs de Talents Latent en 1997 et fait les beaux jours du Quartier Latin de Koffi Olomide pendant sept ans à partir de 1999. Sorti en 2006, son premier album solo, « Droit Chemin », a connu un succès immédiat dans son pays d’origine. Ces dernières années, il a enregistré des chansons avec de grands noms tels qu’Olivia Longott, révélée par 50 Cent, et le Belge Damso.
Pour les amateurs de musique non avertis, ses textes en français et en anglais évoquent automatiquement Roch Voisine ou David Charvet. Cependant, Fally Ipupa puise son inspiration dans un tout autre monde. Il mélange la soul, le funk, la rumba, le hip-hop, les rythmes insulaires et des sous-genres comme le soukous et le ndombolo pour en faire un cocktail très dansant. « Je n’écris pas de l’afropop, mais du « tokooos », de la musique congolaise internationale », précise-t-il. Ce mot qu’il a imaginé est dérivé de « kitoko », qui signifie « beau » ou « positif » en lingala. La musique s’enracine profondément dans l’identité culturelle de Kinshasa, mais teintée d’influences cosmopolites. Le Tokooos alterne des sonorités à la fois familières et étranges, anciennes et nouvelles.
Pour Ipupa, la musique est plus qu’une passion. C’est un mode de vie, une nécessité, une marque de fabrique. Cette approche prouve également son désir d’avoir une identité distincte. Son nom d’état civil est Faustin N’simba Ipupa, mais il est actif sous des noms de plume tels que Le Fally, « The African James Bond » (dixit sa chanson « Bloqué ») ou El Maravilloso. Des pseudonymes à la pelle, certes, mais tout sauf des pseudos en termes d’engagement et de talent brut. Malgré une influence musicale écrasante pour plusieurs générations, il a toujours les deux pieds sur terre. Conscient de son impact, il utilise son statut pour s’engager socialement. Depuis deux ans, il est ambassadeur officiel de l’Unicef, une tâche qu’il prend très au sérieux, tout comme sa production artistique. Avec sa propre Fondation Fally Ipupa (FFI), il tente également de faire la différence pour les plus démunis.
Aujourd’hui, les mots « Congo » et « musique » sont indissociables de Fally Ipupa. He’s the real deal. Une véritable superstar originaire d’un pays extraordinairement grand, qui n’a pas son pareil pour charmer le public avec une ingéniosité sans limites. Attendez-vous à un concert grandiose, car Fally Ipupa vous réserve des chansons de plus de huit minutes qu’il interprète avec une facilité déconcertante, presque proverbiale. The music is deeply rooted in the cultural identity of Kinshasa, but tinged with cosmopolitan influences. Tokooos alternates sounds that are both familiar and strange, old and new.
For Ipupa, music is more than a passion. It’s a way of life, a necessity, a trademark. This approach also proves his desire to have a distinct identity. His real name is Faustin N’simba Ipupa, but he also goes by pen names such as Le Fally, “The African James Bond” (according to his song “Bloqué”) and El Maravilloso. Pseudonyms galore, to be sure, but anything but pseudonyms in terms of commitment and raw talent. Despite an overwhelming musical influence for several generations, he has always kept both feet on the ground. Aware of his impact, he uses his status to get involved in society. For the past two years, he has been an official ambassador for UNICEF, a task he takes as seriously as his artistic output. With his own Fally Ipupa Foundation (FFI), he is also trying to make a difference for the underprivileged.
Today, the words “Congo” and “music” are inextricably linked with Fally Ipupa. He’s the real deal. A true superstar from an extraordinarily large country, he has no equal when it comes to charming audiences with his boundless ingenuity. Expect a grandiose concert, as Fally Ipupa delivers songs lasting over eight minutes, performed with disconcerting, almost proverbial ease. There’s no need to put up any resistance, because the rhythm will sweep the whole venue away!

Zanger, componist, danser, gitarist, producer, et cetera: hij draagt verschillende petten, en allemaal even succesvol. De dagen van deze workaholic lijken vijfentwintig uren te bevatten. Initieel begonnen als straatmuzikant vervoegde hij in 1997 de rangen van Talents Latent en maakte hij vanaf 1999 zeven jaar het mooie weer bij het ‘Quartier Latin’ van Koffi Olomide. Zijn eerste sololangspeler ‘Droit Chemin’ uit 2006 werd een instant succes in zijn thuisland. Niet voor één gat te vangen zocht hij al snel zijn muzikale heil buiten de lands- en taalgrenzen, en nam hij de voorbije jaren nummers op met ronkende namen als 50 Cent poulain Olivia Longott en de Belgische Damso.

Het zelfbedachte woord ‘tokooos’ is afgeleid van ‘kitoko’, wat ‘mooi’ of ‘positief’ betekent in het Lingala. De muziek is diepgeworteld in de culturele identiteit van Kinshasa, evenwel met wereldwijde invloeden. Tokooos klinkt vertrouwd én vreemd, oud én nieuw.
Muziek is voor Ipupa meer dan een passie. Het is een levensstijl, een noodzaak, een keurmerk. Dat bewijst ook zijn drang naar een uitgesproken identiteit. Pseudoniemen bij de vleet, maar allesbehalve pseudo qua inzet en rauw talent. Ondanks het verpletterende muzikale belang voor meerdere generaties, staat hij nog steeds met twee voeten op de grond. Zich bewust van zijn invloed, gebruikt hij zijn status om volop sociaal geëngageerd te zijn. Sinds twee jaar is hij officieel Unicef-ambassadeur, een taak die hij net als zijn artistieke output bijzonder ernstig neemt. Ook met zijn eigen FFI (Fondation Fally Ipupa) probeert hij het verschil te maken voor minderbedeelden.
Wie vandaag de woorden ‘Congo’ en ‘muziek’ in een zin gebruikt, kan niet om Fally Ipupa heen. He’s the real deal. Een rasechte superster uit een waanzinnig groot land, die zijn publiek vernuftig bespeelt en bezweert. Verwacht je aan een groots concert, want Ipupa schudt met spreekwoordelijk gemak songs van meer dan acht minuten uit zijn mouw. Verzet is futiel, stilstaan is onmogelijk!
